Senior moving and downsizing checklist
The most respectful senior move gives decisions enough time, keeps one clear coordinator, and rebuilds familiarity at the destination quickly.
Begin with the destination floor plan and storage capacity. Decisions become easier when the family knows what can physically fit and what the resident uses every day.
Assign one move coordinator. Other family members can help, but the mover and community need one person who can make final placement and schedule decisions.
Four to eight weeks before
Confirm the destination, move-in rules, elevator and loading reservations, room dimensions, and services included. Sort by category and give family members deadlines for claimed belongings.
- Measure favorite furniture
- Collect medical, legal, and financial records
- Schedule donations or estate services separately
- Identify mobility and accessibility needs
- Create a familiar destination layout
Pack by daily importance
Keep medication, documents, hearing aids, glasses, mobility equipment, chargers, clothing, toiletries, and comfort items under family control. Label boxes for exact destination placement.
The destination room comes first
Set up the bed, bathroom, favorite chair, lamp, phone, clock, photographs, and basic clothing before lower-priority boxes. Familiar visual cues can make the first night less disorienting.
Know when other professionals are needed
Moving companies move belongings. Care management, medical transport, estate sales, appraisals, hazardous disposal, deep cleaning, home modifications, and legal decisions belong to the relevant qualified professionals.
Questions about this move
How early should a senior move begin?
Start as early as the destination and family allow. Downsizing and family decisions usually need more time than the physical move.
What should be set up first?
Prioritize the bed, bathroom, mobility aids, favorite chair, lighting, phone, medication access, clothing, and familiar personal items.
Can a mover handle estate-sale or donation decisions?
Those are separate services unless specifically contracted. The family should decide ownership and disposition before move day.
